NASA's Mars rover carrying tool to make oxygen from CO2 in Martian atmosphere

NASA's Perseverance rover, which was launched on Thursday, is carrying an experimental tool to produce oxygen from the carbon dioxide present in the Martian atmosphere. Carbon dioxide makes up nearly 96% of the gas in Mars' atmosphere, while oxygen is only 0.13%, compared to 21% on Earth. Called "MOXIE", the device will electrochemically split CO2 into oxygen and carbon monoxide molecules.
